Adelaide River, Northern Territory, Australia: Where Crocodiles Fly

The spectacular tropical Adelaide River serpents its way south from its headwaters in the Van Diemen Gulf close to Djukbinj National Park to the small township of Adelaide River located on the Stuart Highway about 114 km south of Darwin.

The town and river are renowned throughout Australia and the World for its thrilling and exciting 'Jumping Crocodile' River Cruises. There is where you can see crocodiles, up close and personal as they jump from the murky waters of the river to chase food. It all happens right besides the boat. The small settlement of Adelaide River is located just an hour's drive south of Darwin. When heading south take the left turn at Beatrice Hill on the Arnhem Highway and follow the series of sign-posts to the site of the 'jumping crocodile' topic cruises.

The Adelaide River is furthermore habitat for a multitude of rare and endangered bird life.

The river is well renowned for its high diveristy of fauna including saltwater crocodiles, freshwater crocodiles, white-bellied ocean eagles, whistling kites, bull sharks and Black Flying-fox.

Paul Hogan and Crocodile Dundee were the catalyst that brought world attention on the Northern Territory, Kakadu National Park and of course Crocodiles.

Tourist Visits increased quickly especially during the balmy winter weather from May to October.

The weather is fabulous and it hardly ever rains during this dry season and the temperatures are in the high 20s and low 30s during the day.

The proprietor of the Jumping Crocodile Cruises, Tony Blums had a dream and set out to evolve the Famous Jumping Crocodiles as the celebrity attraction and the public loved it.

Elsewhere all you can see is tired crocs lying asleep on the mangrove mudflats. Here they come to life - Big Time.

The huge reptiles leap out of the water to take food held on long poles from the upper desks of the cruise boat. It is quite safe but still scary.

You can get photographs and videos of crocodiles leaping behind you.

The cruise boat also offers a wide range of crocodile memorabilia to take home as mementos of your 'thrill of a lifetime' adventure.

After a lot of effort to get the wild crocodiles interested in performing there are now over 100 crocodiles that swim out to the cruise vessels of the Adelaide River Queen Cruises The World Famous Jumping Crocodile Cruise has become one Northern Territory's most renowned wildlife attractions and is second to Kakadu National Park and Yulara (Ayers Rock) to the south of Darwin.

There is a fabulous range of other attractions, adventures and exciting things to do in and around Darwin.
