There are some good tools available, but they are expensive, very time consuming and are hard to use. A1 Niches also allows you to sort the list in various ways and search for words that relate to your topic of interest. A1 Niches is also a good way to start learning about how to choose profitable and winning key words. Below I provide a brief introduction to help you learn about the process.
Finding long-tail keywords for profitable and popular niches is the key to success for earning income from Adsense, affiliates, selling goods and services using article, blogs and websites. While there are several free tools for finding keywords options such as and Google Adwords Keyword Tool and SEO Book Keyword Suggestion Tool many people find it hard to get started and to narrow down the options. There are many commercial tools such as Market Samurai, Micro Niche Finder and Keyword Elite.
What most people need is a few good prospects that they can test further.
Most people have are two basic objectives when looking for a keyword:
- Finding keywords for a title for an article, website or blog that you have already written or built to optimize the hits on the landing page for the site and to get a ranking so you appear on the first page of Google results.
- Finding a profitable topic for a competitive website, article or blog so that you can research it and prepare your material knowing it will succeed.
Where Do you Start?
There are several criteria for using to find profitable phrases will be for you.
Search Frequency - You need a phrase that people are already searching for frequently, but the best keywords with high hits will already be taken and so you should choose a keyword that return 500-1000 hits per month. It will be a long-tail keyword that is relatively specific and will not have been targeted by other websites and pages (hopefully).
How Much Google Adwords Advertisers are willing to pay for the keyword (Cost per Click or Payment per Click) - You will want to choose a keyword that will return a reasonable payment for a click on your page. There is a trade-off here as most of the high paying keywords will already be taken by pages with high Page Rank. The least competitive keyword phases may only pay one or two cents. You should aim for somewhere in the middle and perhaps sacrifice some of the frequency for words that will give a small to moderate return.
How much Competition exists for your Keyword Phrase - If you are going to write an article or build a website for a keyword target you want to know that you will have a chance against the competition that already exists for that keyword. Fundamentally you have to have a reasonable chance of ranking high enough for the keyword to compete. There are numerous articles and software products that deal with this topic. There are three aspects for this:
- Average page rank for competing pages***.
- Number of pages that already have the specific keyword phrase in their page title, description and in the anchor text for pages that link to the site of page. You can estimate the number of pages that compete in terms of these aspects by conducting various specific Google searches
- Number of backlinks for the pages you are competing with.
*** Note: Page ranks are not very accurate and are seldom up to date and so the number of backlinks provides a defacto additional way of seeing how much effort your competitors have put into SEO.
Are There Lists of Profitable Keywords Available to Make a Start?
There are various sources of keyword lists and many operators who will do the work for you at a price, but they can be very expensive. Most of the keyword lists available do not have the three data items that you need:
- Adsense Cost Per Click or Price per Click
- Global searches per month
- Estimated Relative Competition for the Keyword considering all the elements Page Rank, backlinks, and sites that have the keyword in the Title, Description, etc.
I have developed a new site that provides free online free lists of niche keywords to get you started - It is called A1 Niches .
This site has a database of over 6000 keyword phrases that are FREELY available online.
The list includes 50 keywords for each of the 300 most frequently search topics.
A summary of the information provided in the list is shown below:
The best keyword prospects are color-coded in the lists:
- The keywords labelled blue have good prospects for further research with competition below 40% and more than 500 hits per month.
- The keywords labelled red have excellent prospects for further research with competition below 40% and more than 500 hits per month.
Users can sort the data for listing by each of the criteria.
- Sort by CPC (expected payment fro an Adsense click)
- Sort the keywords alphabetically
- Sort by Competition (%) - Lowest to highest
- Sort by Global Hits per month - Highest to Lowest
The color coding helps to identify good prospects.
Users can also enter a search term to apply a filter and get a list of words for that phrase.

What's Next? How do I refine my Keyword Choice
Once you have a hand-full of options you can conduct additional research to find the ideal one for your site. There are many expensive commercial packages for doing this but there are Two excellent FREE tools for doing this are:
- Niche Market Finder - which is a FREE windows application
- Auto suggest Keyword - which is a FREE online tool
Niche Market Finder - Allow you to test the competition for an entered keyword phrase.
It analyzes the top 50 or so sites for the keyword in terms of PR, backlinks and whether or not the keyword is in the URL, Title and Description. The output is color-coded - a sea of green means good prospects and a sea of red mean poor prospects.
Below are the Good, the not so Bad and the Ugly
The Free Auto Suggestion Tool uses Google's Auto-Suggestion to provide popular expansions on your preliminary keyword choice. You can then select various Google searches including inTitle, inURL, etc. searches and directly see your competitors in a popup search window. This will show you the number of competing website and pages for the keyword you are researching. This is the best way of seeing what you are competing against.
