Make Sure You See The Wonderful Art Nouveau in Prague, Czech Republic
The stunning Municipal House, dating from 1912, is Prague's premier Art Nouveau building. It currently houses a large concert hall, a stylish French restaurant, a Czech beer-hall type of restaurant, and exhibition rooms displaying a fabulous collection of Art Nouveau art, posters, decorations, ceramics and other items.
The Municipal house is a stunning building not only inside with its Art nouveau decorations, including the lift and stirs, but on the outside with its complex stonework, frescos, gold-colored trimmings and stained glass windows. Inside, the huge Smetana Concert Hall is accessed by a marble staircase with art nouveau decorations.
The Francouzska Restaurant also has wonderful decorations. Several other buildings in Prague showcase the Art nouveau style - Hotel Central, Hotel Europa, Novak Department store, St Vitus cathedral, and the Central Station.
Prague also features wonderful displays of Art Nouveau in its Museums and Art Galleries, some of which are permanent and others temporary. Make sure you enquire about these exhibitions when you visit Prague.
In some ways the monumental and unique architecture is similar to the those of Horta in Brussels and Gaudi in Barcelona.
Art Nouveau in Museums and Galleries
While I was visiting Prague there were outstanding exhibits of Art Nouveau in the following places.
- The exhibits in the Municipal House
- The Gallery of Art Prague had an odd combination of displays of art by Alfons Mucha , Salvador Dali, and Andy Warhol.
- Displays in the Trade Fair Palace (Veletrzni Palace)
If you are planning a trip to Prague make sure you do some research and find out how to see similar displays of Art Nouveau when you visit.
